SLS MEMBERS ONLY – Resuscitation Award (Learning Plan)
Introduction:
The Resuscitation Award provides Surf Life Saving members with the skills and knowledge to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on an adult, child or infant. Holding both the Resuscitation Award and Observers Award allows members to patrol with any Surf Life Saving club.
As part of the course, you’ll also learn SLS Lifesaving CPR techniques, which are used by Surf Life Saving members when responding to a lifesaving emergency. Learn more about Lifesaving CPR.

Requirements:
PRE-REQUISITES
- To enrol in the Resuscitation Award, participants must first meet the listed requirements:
Be a current financial member of an SLS Club - Be at least 10 years of age on the date of final assessment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Participants must be able to perform CPR on an adult manikin positioned on the floor for a minimum of 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR.
- Participants must also demonstrate CPR on an infant manikin as part of the assessment.
Learning Outcomes:
- Respond to an emergency situation
- Respond to signs of an unconscious casualty
- Perform CPR
- Communicate details of the incident
Learning Methods:
The Recusation Award is a Club-delivered course that combines online learning, face-to-face training and practical assessment.
Your club trainer will support you through the learning and practical components of the course
Once enrolled, you will need to:
1. Check your booking confirmation email for access to your Learning Plan.
2. Read your Learning Plan to understand the course and assessment requirements.
3. Complete the required eLearning through the SLS Hub.
4. Upload evidence of your completed eLearning to aXcelerate.
5. Attend all required face-to-face training sessions.
6. Complete the required practical assessments.
Important: Your trainer will advise you when the required eLearning must be completed. For this course, some may ask you to complete the elearning and online assessment during your face-to-face training. It must be completed before the practical assessment.
You will need to demonstrate your ability to apply the skills and knowledge covered throughout the course. Assessment activities may include questioning, practical demonstrations, simulated scenarios and completion of incident documentation.
Practical assessment includes:
If you hold HLTAID009 for workplace purposes, you must complete a CPR refresher course every 12 months to maintain its currency, in accordance with Australian Resuscitation Council guidance.

ASSESSMENT
Assessment is competency-based and includes an online knowledge assessment, practical demonstrations and simulated scenarios.You will need to demonstrate your ability to apply the skills and knowledge covered throughout the course. Assessment activities may include questioning, practical demonstrations, simulated scenarios and completion of incident documentation.
Practical assessment includes:
- Assessing a patient.
- Performing CPR on both an adult and infant manikin.
- Completing a simulated resuscitation scenario.
PROFICIENCY
Both the SLS Resuscitation Award and the associated unit of competency, HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation, require an annual update to maintain currency. However, SLS Skills Maintenance (Proficiency) only updates your SLS award. It does not update or extend the currency of any associated Unit of Competency.If you hold HLTAID009 for workplace purposes, you must complete a CPR refresher course every 12 months to maintain its currency, in accordance with Australian Resuscitation Council guidance.
Important: Completing SLS Skills Maintenance/Proficiency does NOT update or extend your HLTAID009 qualification.
