SLS MEMBERS ONLY – Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
Introduction:
The Advance Resuscitation Techniques (ART) course is to develop skills and knowledge to manage life-threatening external bleeding, use oxygen, airway management devices and automated external defibrillators during resuscitation, and to administer oxygen to conscious or unconscious victims.
Requirements:
To enrol in the Advanced Resuscitation Techniques participants must first meet the listed requirements:
- Hold the unit of competency HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
- The minimum age requirement is at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
- Participants must also understand and have current knowledge in the area of basic first aid
Learning Outcomes:
- HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
- HLTAID015 Provide Advanced Resuscitation & Oxygen Therapy

You will also need an everyday standard of language‚ literacy and numeracy skills to be able to:
• follow written, verbal and visual instructions
• read and interpret a range of signs and symbols
• read and interpret written information
• make basic mathematical calculations to carry out everyday activities
• keep accurate written records.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment is through demonstration‚ presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.
PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
For a ART qualification to be recognised for use in a workplace, you must refresh your skills by completing a refresher course every 12 months. This is a requirement set by the Australian Resuscitation Council.

- Respond to an emergency situation
- Manage life-threatening external bleeding
- Perform primary (DRABCD) and secondary (vital signs) assessment of a victim
- Perform advanced resuscitation, including use of oxygen equipment, oropharyngeal airways and suction
- Identify victims suffering from condition(s) where providing oxygen would be beneficial
- Communicate details of an incident
- Complete documentation
- Evaluate an incident and your own performance
- Identify possible psychological impacts of first aid incidents and how to seek help
- Restore equipment ready for use
