SLS MEMBERS ONLY – ART (Learning Plan)

Introduction:

Develop the skills to provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy in an emergency.

The Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART) Award prepares you to take a lead role in critical situations and provide a higher level of emergency care. You’ll develop the skills and knowledge to perform advanced life support, including oxygen administration, airway management and defibrillation, as well as managing severe bleeding.

ART is an important lifesaving qualification for members who may be required to provide advanced emergency care as part of an SLS patrol or emergency response.

On successful completion, you will achieve:

SLS Award: Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART)

Nationally recognised units of competency:
  • HLTAID015 Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy
  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Training and assessment is conducted in accordance with the requirements of the relevant units of competency and current Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines.

Requirements:

To enrol in the Advanced Resuscitation Techniques, participants must first meet the listed requirements:

  • Hold the unit of competency HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
  • The minimum age requirement is at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Be a current financial member of an SLS Club
  • Must also understand and have current knowledge in the area of basic first aid

Physical Requirements

Participants must be able to perform CPR on an adult manikin positioned on the floor for a minimum of 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR.

Participants must also demonstrate CPR on an infant manikin as part of the assessment.
 

Learning Outcomes:

  • HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • HLTAID015 Provide Advanced Resuscitation & Oxygen Therapy

Learning Methods:

ART is a club-delivered course that combines online learning, face-to-face training and practical assessment.
Your club trainer will support you through the learning and practical components of the course.

The course requires approximately 8 hours of training and assessment, in addition to required pre-course learning.

Once enrolled, you will need to:
  1. Check your booking confirmation email for access to your Learning Plan.
  2. Read your Learning Plan to understand the course and assessment requirements.
  3. Complete the required eLearning through the SLS Hub.
  4. Upload evidence of your completed eLearning to aXcelerate.
  5. Attend all required face-to-face training sessions.
  6. Complete the required practical assessments.
Important: Required eLearning must be completed before attending the relevant practical training and assessment.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is competency-based and includes online knowledge assessment and practical demonstrations and scenarios.
You will be required to demonstrate your ability to apply the skills and knowledge covered throughout the course.
Practical assessment includes:
  • Demonstrate CPR on an infant manikin.
  • Assess and manage an adult casualty requiring oxygen, including the appropriate use of oxygen and airway management equipment.
  • Manage an unconscious, non-breathing adult using CPR, airway management, oxygen and AED equipment.
  • Assess and manage severe external bleeding using appropriate bleeding-control equipment.
Assessment activities may include practical demonstrations, scenarios, questioning and completion of incident documentation. 

PROFICIENCY 

SLS Skills Maintenance

To remain proficient as an SLS ART operator, members must complete the applicable SLS Skills Maintenance requirements each season.

Nationally recognised units of competency

The currency requirements for nationally recognised first aid units may differ from SLS proficiency requirements. Participants should check the requirements of their workplace, industry or relevant regulatory authority to determine whether additional refresher training is required.

  • Perform primary (DRABCD) and secondary (vital signs) assessment of a victim
  • Perform advanced resuscitation, including use of oxygen equipment, oropharyngeal airways and suction
  • Identify victims suffering from condition(s) where providing oxygen would be beneficial
  • Communicate details of an incident
  • Complete documentation
  • Evaluate an incident and your own performance
  • Identify possible psychological impacts of first aid incidents and how to seek help
  • Restore equipment ready for use
