SA Member Course Details

SLS MEMBERS ONLY – Radio Operator Certificate

Introduction:

The purpose of this Radio Operators Certificate course is to help the participant develop skills and knowledge to effectively operate communications systems and equipment in their local lifesaving environment. The award is designed for members who are either working towards obtaining their Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) or members who wish to contribute to radio operations in their local surf lifesaving clubs without completing the full qualification.

Requirements:

Entry Requirements
• Candidates must be at least 13 years of age and a financial member of their surf lifesaving club on the date of final assessment.

Certification
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded the SLSA Radio Operators Certificate.
You will also receive the following nationally recognised units of competency:
• PUAOPE013 Operate communications systems and equipment

Learning Outcomes:

  • identify the different radios used in their local lifesaving club environment volunteering activities
  • perform a radio check using correct radio communication procedures
  • know the difference between simplex and duplex channels and be able to select the correct channel for communicating with patrol team members and SurfCom which is a SLS Communication Centre
  • Correctly use procedural words (prowords) in the appropriate context
  • operate a radio and communicate messages effectively using call signs, prowords and the 4 Ps
  • know what to do if there are interruptions to radio communications and if a radio is dropped into water
  • reset and restore the radio for the next patrol or special event

Learning Methods:

You will also need an everyday standard of language‚ literacy and numeracy skills to be able to:
• follow written, verbal and visual instructions
• read and interpret a range of signs and symbols
• read and interpret written information
• make basic mathematical calculations to carry out everyday activities
• keep accurate written records.
