Introduction:
This Provide First Aid course has been designed for those who prefer to complete ‘self-paced’ theory online (approximately 4 hours), followed by a shorter face-to-face training and assessment session (4 hours).
The course aims to develop the knowledge and skills for a person to manage emergency first aid situations and deliver competent emergency care until the arrival of professional medical support.
Participants will be able to perform effective CPR techniques and manage a range of emergency situations that include:
- Medical emergencies such as asthma, anaphylaxis and heart conditions
- Trauma such as bleeding, fractures, sprains and strains, and more
All Provide First Aid eLearning modules have been designed to cater for multiple learning styles. You can either read the body of text, watch videos, listen to voice overs, or combine these learning styles.
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is a Nationally Accredited course and the certificate is valid for three (3) years from the completion date. (HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR renewal required annually).
Requirements:
Participants must be a minimum age of 14 years on the date of final assessment.

Learning Methods:
Surf Life Saving SA is committed to providing inclusive and supportive learning environments for all participants. We recognise that individuals may have diverse learning styles, language backgrounds, literacy or numeracy needs, or other support requirements. We encourage students who may require reasonable adjustments to contact us prior to registering for a course so we can discuss and implement appropriate support strategies to ensure access to the training.
Participants are required to:
Participants will need to demonstrate various first aid techniques such as administering an EpiPen, Asthma Puffer with Spacer and trauma management including bandaging, supporting and splinting.
Participants will also need to demonstrate CPR on training manikins – adult, child and infant in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines.
To meet the unit of competency, the participant needs to demonstrate at least two (2) minutes of CPR on an adult and infant manikin on the floor.
Assessment is scenario based. Participants are required to demonstrate the essential skills and knowledge to respond to a range of first aid or emergency situations, including scenarios aligned with the performance criteria required for this course.

- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance ARC guidelines.
- Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles.
- Display respectful behaviour towards casualty.
- Obtain consent from casualty where possible.
- Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible.
- Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions.
- Monitor the casualty’s condition and respond in accordance with first aid principles.
- Accurately convey incident details to emergency services.
- Report details of incident in line with appropriate workplace or site procedures.
- Complete applicable workplace or site documentation, including incident report form.
- Maintain privacy and confidentiality of information in line with statutory or organisational policies.
- Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers and seek help when required.
- Contribute to a review of the first aid response as required.
