The SISSS00133 Pool Lifeguard Skill Set course consists of 2 days of face to face training and assessment.
Successful learners will have the skills and knowledge required to work as a Pool Lifeguard. It is also recommended for those involved in aquatic exercise‚ swim coaching‚ aquatic excursions or who have responsibility for the supervision and safety of people in and around swimming pools.
Industry guidelines recommend the Pool Lifeguard course be updated annually by completing a Pool Lifeguard requalification course (assessment only course).
You must be aware of when your Pool Lifeguard qualification expires. Industry has determined that a Pool Lifeguard certificate must be updated every 12 months by undertaking a requalification course. Once the date of expiry has passed you will be unable to work and unable to take a requalification course and will be required to enrol in a full course.

Learning Outcomes:
- Once you have successfully completed our training, you will be issued a statement of attainment with the following units of competency:
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid (credit transfer)
- SISCAQU019 Supervise patron safety in aquatic locations
- SISCAQU020 Perform water rescues
- SISCAQU021 Perform complex water rescues
- SISCAQU022 Provide oxygen resuscitation and therapy in an aquatic environment
- During the training you will also be assessed in HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation and receive a separate statement of attainment for this unit

You will be assessed throughout the course using a variety of methods:

Physical elements of the course:
- Demonstrate correct swimming strokes (freestyle‚ breaststroke, side stroke and survival backstroke);
- Participate in four simulated water rescues to return a person in difficulty to a point of safety;
- Complete a 10m swim and then complete one non-contact tow, towing the rescued person for at least 10m, and remove the person from the water without assistance from another person;
- Complete a 10m swim and then complete one contact tow, towing the rescued person for at least 10m, and remove the person from the water with assistance from one other person;
- Complete a 25m swim and then retrieve a submerged object replicating a person from a depth of no more than 2m. At the surface contact tow an unconscious casualty for at least 25m and work in a team to safely and efficiently extract the person from the water;
- Complete a 10m swim and then complete one contact tow of a conscious casualty for at least 10m, and remove the person from the water without assistance from another person;
- Complete a 25 metre swim and 25 metre non-contact tow of a conscious casualty, with an assisted landing and work in a team to safely and efficiently extract the person from the water;
- Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on both an adult and child manikin on the floor;
- Perform at least 2 minutes of bag-valve-mask (with oxygen) ventilation and at least 2 minutes of compression during resuscitation procedures involving at least 2 rescuers on both an adult and child manikin on the floor;
- Be fit and capable to perform assisted lifts (spinal management) with other Pool Lifeguards.
Assessment
You will be assessed throughout the course using a variety of methods:
- Long and short answer questions
- Multiple choice questions
- Oral questions
- Practical demonstrations
- Scenarios situations
- Role playing
- Peer assessments
You will also complete several assessment tasks as follows:
- Scenario assessment – Participants are required to demonstrate the essential skills and knowledge to respond to a range of aquatic emergency situations, including scenarios aligned with the performance criteria required for this program.
- Demonstration of CPR procedures – Participants will demonstrate CPR on training manikins – adult and infant – in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines.
- Demonstration of various first aid & rescue techniques – Participants, individually and as a group, are required to demonstrate competency in a range of first aid & rescue principles.
- Theory assessment – Participants must complete a theory assessment.
