This course is designed to provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge so you can continue your journey as a pool lifeguard or enhance your professional development.

You will receive comprehensive training in aquatic emergency care‚ emergency management, oxygen resuscitation, aquatic facility supervision and maintain your annual CPR requirements. 


This course is designed to be completed every twelve months so you can continue employment. Together with your first aid (HLTAID003 - Provide First Aid)‚ you will hold the necessary units of competency to work as a pool lifeguard.

Our course recognises your current experience and qualifications and allows for an assessment only pathway to complete this course. 

Target Audience:

To participate in this course‚ you are required to have the following prerequisites:
  • A current SISSS00111 - Pool Lifeguard Certificate (or equivalent)
  • A current HLTAID003 - Provide First Aid certificate

Learning Outcomes:

  • Once you have successfully completed our training, you will be issued a statement of attainment with the following units of competency:
  • HLTAID003 Provide First Aid (credit transfer)
  • HLTAID001 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • PUAEME001 Provide emergency care
  • PUAEME003 Administer oxygen in an emergency
  • SISCAQU002 Perform basic water rescues
  • SISCAQU006 Supervise clients in aquatic locations
  • SISCAQU007 Perform advanced water rescues

Learning Methods:

Special Needs and LLN Reasonable Adjustment

Surf Life Saving SA/NT recognises that students participating in its training courses may have varying learning styles and support requirements. These may include but are not limited to students with language‚ literacy and/or numeracy concerns, or abilities. Students with any special needs are requested to contact us prior to registering for a course to discuss suitable arrangements.

Physical elements of the course:
  • Swim 200 metres in less than 6 minutes without using equipment;
  • Demonstrate correct swimming strokes (freestyle, breaststroke, side stroke and survival backstroke);
  • Perform a non-contact tow: 25m swim and 25m tow within 1 minute 45 secs;
  • Be fit and capable to perform assisted lifts (spinal management) with other Pool Lifeguards.
  • Retrieve an object from deepest water in the aquatic centre, (3m maximum).


You will be assessed throughout the course using a variety of methods.
  • Long and short answer questions
  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Oral questions.
  • Practical demonstrations
  • Scenarios situations
  • Role playing
  • Peer assessments

You will also complete several assessment tasks as follows:
  • Scenario assessment – Participants are required to demonstrate the essential skills and knowledge to respond to a range of aquatic emergencies, including scenarios aligned with the performance criteria required for this program.
  • Demonstration of Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation procedures – Participants will demonstrate Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation on training manikins – adult, child and infant – in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines.
  • Demonstration of various first aid & Rescue techniques – Participants, individually and as a group, are required to demonstrate competency in a range of first aid & rescue principles.
  • Theory Assessment – Participants must complete a written theory assessment
